An engaged couple gave their friends and family a beautiful surprise at their housewarming party, standing on the roof and informing them that they were getting married right then. Elizabeth Haiser and Holden Blanco, from Philadelphia, got engaged in August 2022 – and initially, they toyed with the idea of getting married in Colombia, where Holden's family is based. But after buying a house together, the couple decided to postpone their wedding but still wanted to get legally married. As a wedding photographer, Elizabeth, 27, has always loved the idea of doing something different, given that she's at a wedding every weekend. And so, having crossed off ideas like getting married in their city hall, the couple decided to turn their housewarming party into a surprise wedding for all those they love. On July 29, as friends and family gathered at their new home, Elizabeth and Holden, 29, stood on the roof of their new property and announced the big surprise to the gathering crowd. After a series of stunned reactions, everyone moved inside for a small, intimate ceremony, which Elizabeth admitted had no serious planning or logistics and left to a friend. The 27-year-old stitched together photos and videos of the day, which she then shared on TikTok to a loving response, given how spontaneous and unique the day was.

A United States airman gave his Leukemia-battling sister a moment she will never forget, when he returned home to surprise her before heading to overseas for three years. Alex Crider, 19, joined the Air Force in April 2023, and had been in training ever since. His sister, Maddie, who he is extremely close to, was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in October 2021 and has been in remission for around two years. The family were aware Alex could return home before being based in the United Kingdom – but they weren't sure when and only expected his visit to be a couple of days. In a touch of good fortune, tough, Alex discovered that he could return home for a week, and so he started to plan a surprise for Maddie, 16. On November 4, at the family's home in Missouri, Maddie waited for her mom Katie and younger sister to return from the store, as they had told her they were heading out to get cold medicine. Secretly, though, Katie, 37, had collected her son from the airport, and after she entered the house, Maddie was called into the living room. There, she discovered her older brother – a moment that left her speechless – before the pair headed in for an embrace that had been more than six months coming.

A woman raised by her grandma in Mexico before moving to join her mom in the US finally got the chance to return home and surprise her beloved “second mom” after 12 years apart. Shiela ‘Shay’ Panecatl Ponce, who lives in Downey, California, built an extremely close bond with grandma Laura Lopez Flores, 64, during the decade she was raised by her in Guadalajara, Mexico. According to Shay, 23, her mom suffered from domestic violence and fled to the United States, leaving Shay, who was just two years old at the time, to be raised by her grandma in her hometown. In 2010, Shay headed to the US to join her mom, and once there, she was able to apply for a U-Visa, which covers individuals who have been victims of certain crimes. Over the years that followed, Shay really missed her grandma, who had once raised her as her own, and her family also suffered tragedy in November 2020 when Shay's younger brother died in a car accident aged just 18. When Shay later received confirmation her green card had been approved on February 22, she decided to keep the news secret from her family back home. She planned a trip from her home in California back to Guadalajara a couple of months later with her aunt, who is still based in Mexico. On April 4, Laura entered a room where she was greeted with a giant gift placed in front of her while she was blindfolded. When the blindfold was removed and Laura approached the package, she discovered a teddy bear and, emerging from the giant bag, her granddaughter, who she had not seen in 12 years. The pair headed in for an emotional hug.

An adopted boy with Down syndrome was given a loving surprise when he opened a car door to discover his birth mom. 16-year-old Devlin Cropley’s reunion was the third such surprise his adoptive parents have planned in a year – as they previously reunited his one adopted sibling, Cameron, 21, with his best friend from a previous school, and another adopted brother, Joey, 21, with his biological sibling after 10 years apart. Devlin currently lives with the Pinkerton family in Glenrock, Wyoming, having been adopted through The Down Syndrome Adoption Network, which places children and teens with the condition into homes.
