Where the foothills of Mount Kenya merge into the desert, the people of Samburu have maintained a strict patriarchy for over 500 years in northern Kenya. That is, until 25 years ago, when Rebecca Lolosoli founded Umoja village as a safe haven for the region's women. Umoja, which means “unity” in Swahili, is quite literally a no man's land, and the matriarchal refuge is now home to the Samburu women who no longer want to suffer abuses, like genital mutilation and forced marriages, at the hands of men. Throughout the years, it has also empowered women in the districts surrounding Samburu to start their own women-only villages. Broadly visited Umoja and the villages it inspired to meet with the women who were fed up with living in a violent patriarchy.

Drag has been a gay man's art for decades, but women can be queens, too. While women have always existed in the drag scene as the subject of imitation, in London, female-identified performers are taking center stage and performing in exaggerated tropes of femininity to upend conventional notions of gender.  

Lady queens, however, are not yet fully accepted in the drag community; some gay men in the scene question whether those who are female-identified have the right to compete and perform next to their male counterparts. In "London’s Female Drag Queens" Broadly explores a day in the life of three women who are reclaiming drag for themselves, redefining its heritage, and proving that drag is a genderless art form.

Adnan Oktar is the most notorious cult leader in Turkey. In addition to introducing the world to his bizarre take on Islamic religion, the Muslim creationist credits himself with introducing his followers to feminism. 

Oktar refers to his cadre of devoted women as "kittens." At his behest, the "kittens" shirk hijabs and traditional dress. Instead, they wear designer outfits, apply heavy makeup, and undergo plastic surgery. They also happen to be wealthy socialites. 

Together, Oktar and his followers are ushering in what they call the new face of modern Islam. Oktar and his kittens even have their own television network to broadcast their views, which include discrediting evolution. 

Broadly spends three strange days with the cult leader and his "kittens" to see what life in Oktar's cult is really like for women.

This is the Chechen Republic’s Instagram tyrant, Ramzan Kadyrov. For more than a decade, he has murdered his rivals, tortured his critics and terrorized the country’s population with a heavily armed militia he calls the ‘Kadyrovtsy’. More recently, he has waged a brutal genocide on LGBTQ+ people living in Chechen Republic in Southern Russia.

Veronica Koman has been branded a traitor for her work defending human rights in Papua, a region of Indonesia where state security forces have a long and dark record of human rights abuses. 
 
It’s controversial work, even among human rights activists in Indonesia. Papua is home to a decades long fight for the right to self determination—a vote to decide whether or not to remain part of indonesia. 

It colors much of the national discourse about human rights in the region, and it’s why some have branded Veronica a separatist.

Some museums are now trying to engage with the problematic history of their collections; from repatriating items to their country of origin to re-examining the ethics of displaying human remains. We can’t change the past, but we can change how we acknowledge it in the present – even if it’s uncomfortable.
