Florida Highway Patrol troopers are searching for a driver who struck a man standing next to a disabled vehicle on I-75.  The crash happened around 7:00 p.m. near Exit 193, Jacaranda Blvd., on New Year's Eve.   Zachary Edmonds said his girlfriend ran out of gasoline on her way to work. He brought her gas can and was filling up her car when he was struck by a vehicle.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of intimate partner violence.  To stop that violence from becoming deadly in 2005, the folks with the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence (MNADV) helped create the Lethality Assessment Program or LAP—which is now used by advocates and law enforcement agencies across Maryland and across the country.

But on one window, three different flags also hang.  Oliver Laczo, a student, sees all of the flags as symbols. Symbols that his school sees and hears him and his classmates.

Saturday, Latinos across the Tampa Bay area celebrated Three Kings Day, also known as Dia De Los Reyes.   An event at ZooTampa was sold out as 150 children pre-registered for the Three Kings Day and Toy Giveaway celebration hosted by State Representative Susan Valdes.   The event featured the Three Kings, who explained the reason for the celebration to the children. Dia De Los Reyes is a holiday celebrated by many in the Latino culture, celebrating the day the Three Kings came to visit Baby Jesus.

Florida property insurance rates continue to climb with no end in sight

Monday, Rays shortstop Wander was released from jail in the Dominican Republic. He paid a fine of about $34,000 and has to appear in court on the 30th of each month for at least the next six months- or until his case is resolved.  Tampa Bay's most talented prospect is under investigation for money laundering and commercial sexual exploitation. Prosecutors allege that Franco, 22, paid the mother of an 14-year-old girl in exchange for having a relationship with the minor.

There is a bill in the Florida Legislature that aims to protect domestic violence victims called the Gabby Petito Act. It was filed in response to the death of Gabby Petito, whose story and death made national news in 2021.   Gabby's fiance, who lived in North Port, admitted to killing her while the two were on a cross-country road trip.  ABC Action News spoke to a survivor who said she wants to raise awareness and show people that change is needed. Courtney Weil thinks the Gabby Petito Act can save lives and that it would have helped her.

While much of the focus of Florida's insurance crisis has been on property insurance, a different type of insurance is giving a stop sign to many residents.  Auto insurance premiums skyrocketed by 20.3% in December from a year earlier, the largest increase since the mid-1970s, Labor Department data showed.  Florida drivers like Richard Fegoe have some of the highest car insurance costs in the country. He's had the same car insurance company for 30 years and considers himself to be a very safe driver.
