A Mount Pleasant dance teacher is facing child pornography charges. 37-year-old Gilbert Mata was arrested in April 2022. Parents whose kids attended the studio where Mata worked said they're just now finding out.

"Initially I felt sad. I'm sad there are people like this that take the most vulnerable populations and exploit them," Gracie Schmelter said.

Schmelter is one of several parents TMJ4 spoke to Tuesday, whose children attended Dance Arts Center (DAC) in Mount Pleasant.

"I found out from a friend of mine. She called me yesterday morning and my daughter was supposed to start dance class yesterday evening," Schmelter said.

Child porn charges for former dance teacher

A well-known local university weather program is coming to an end this spring.

The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee (UWM) says the decision to end the Innovative Weather program comes from rising costs and a decline in funding. The last day of operation is April 30, 2024.

"It was very frustrating to see this fantastic program in the position it is in now. After many others and I, Paul Roebber, Mike Westendorf have done an unbelievable amount of work fighting uphill for so long," Director of Operations for the weather program Alex Bukvich explains.

Some early Friday showers, mostly dry weekend

A partnership that has lasted over three decades is coming to an end at the Milwaukee County Zoo. The non-profit, Ocean Connections will be leaving the zoo in early December.

The group provides forever homes to both seals and sea lions.

“There are people that will never see these animals out in the wild, and that means a lot to us,” Ocean Connections Founder Shelley Ballmann explained.

Milwaukee's seals and sea lions exhibit to close

The stage is set for what’s expected to be a historical Wednesday night inside Fiserv Forum.

While the Milwaukee Bucks' arena is preparing to host its first-ever volleyball match between No. 1 Wisconsin and Marquette University, it's also anticipated that a new record will be set for the most-attended women's sporting event in state history.

The Badgers currently hold the record after last year's match against the University of Florida, which drew 16,833 fans to Kohl Center on Sept. 16.

A Marquette University official shared with TMJ4 Sports that Wednesday's match is sold out inside Fiserv Forum, an arena that has a seating capacity surpassing 17,000.

Women's volleyball has seen an upward growth in support over the last decade, making Wednesday's match that much more special for Marquette right-side hitter Ella Foti.

Marquette vs. Wisconsin: Volleyball match making history

People across the state are preparing for Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin to resume abortion services Monday.

“Our teams are ready to be providing healthcare again and provide this service to Wisconsinites,” Analiese Eicher said.

Eicher is a communications consultant with Planned Parenthood. She said the response since they made the announcement Thursday has been overwhelming.

Abortion care services are back at Wisconsin Planned Parenthood clinics

Milwaukee is one of two cities in the country to launch a pilot program to help provide affordable and accessible childcare so parents can get to work.

TMJ4 News first reported on the pilot program and how it could help solve America's skilled worker shortage, in the spring of 2023. That program is now being extended.

Labor unions could have a solution for the nation's childcare crisis

In true Wisconsin fashion, the largest manufacturer of beer tap handles in the country is located in Sheboygan County. That company now is competing for the title of the coolest thing made in Wisconsin.

Hankscraft AJS Tap Handles in Random Lake, Sheboygan County makes tap handles for hyper-local microbreweries all the way up to companies like the publicly traded Molson Coors.

“So we do roughly half a million tap handles a year, so it’s large," Eric Gruener, the president of Hankscraft AJS said.

Inside the largest beer tap manufacturer in the United States

Big changes in women's health care as Planned Parenthood Wisconsin re-started abortion care statewide, Monday.

This comes after last week's announcement that Planned Parenthood would be opening up appointments and starting services this week.

Dozens of anti-abortion rights activists lined the streets of Milwaukee's Water Street location Monday for most of the day. They said this change is a disregard for the law, while abortion rights activists said this is a move in the right direction.

"Knowing that I one, had a choice, not only did I have a choice, but I had a safe place to get it done," Shantell Riley said.

In the early 90s, Riley said she was faced with the difficult decision to terminate her pregnancy.

Waukesha unveils new public safety memorial

The Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) has changed its policy to no longer share a crime victim’s gender or race with the public.

The department says it comes after instances of police misgendering victims in the transgender community.

As a member of the LGBTQ community and a Milwaukee Police Department LGBTQ liaison, Sgt. Guadalupe Velasquez says she approached MPD’s administration back in May to ask for a policy change after the department misgendered a crime victim who was transgender.

“We don’t want to make a traumatic experience for a family worse,” she said.

Police no longer share victims' gender/race after misgendering instances

On the anniversary of 9/11, community leaders in Kewaskum encouraged others to not only remember those who stepped up during the nation’s time of need but to get inspired to do the same.

Dozens gathered at the Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial and Educational Center Monday in commemoration of the attack that shook the nation 22 years ago, more than 900 miles away. 

For father Gordon Haberman it’s a tragedy that hits especially close to home. His daughter Andrea Haberman was one of three former Wisconsin residents killed that day.

"Part of every day is 9/11 for us and we miss our daughter terribly,” he said.
