The family of a boy hit by a car and injured on Fond du Lac Avenue says they're grateful, and lucky, he's alive.

"There was so many people out there that helped. And my son just wants to thank everybody who helped him," said Mary Gorecki, the boy's mother.

Milwaukee Police said they're now investigating the incident on Sunday night near 35th and Fond du Lac. They say the 14-year-old, identified by family as Malachi Willis, was crossing the road when he was hit.

Police say the 20-year-old driver of the car stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

14-year-old Milwaukee teen hit, injured by driver

A well-known local university weather program is coming to an end this spring.

The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee (UWM) says the decision to end the Innovative Weather program comes from rising costs and a decline in funding. The last day of operation is April 30, 2024.

"It was very frustrating to see this fantastic program in the position it is in now. After many others and I, Paul Roebber, Mike Westendorf have done an unbelievable amount of work fighting uphill for so long," Director of Operations for the weather program Alex Bukvich explains.

Some early Friday showers, mostly dry weekend

A partnership that has lasted over three decades is coming to an end at the Milwaukee County Zoo. The non-profit, Ocean Connections will be leaving the zoo in early December.

The group provides forever homes to both seals and sea lions.

“There are people that will never see these animals out in the wild, and that means a lot to us,” Ocean Connections Founder Shelley Ballmann explained.

Milwaukee's seals and sea lions exhibit to close

People across the state are preparing for Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin to resume abortion services Monday.

“Our teams are ready to be providing healthcare again and provide this service to Wisconsinites,” Analiese Eicher said.

Eicher is a communications consultant with Planned Parenthood. She said the response since they made the announcement Thursday has been overwhelming.

Abortion care services are back at Wisconsin Planned Parenthood clinics

In true Wisconsin fashion, the largest manufacturer of beer tap handles in the country is located in Sheboygan County. That company now is competing for the title of the coolest thing made in Wisconsin.

Hankscraft AJS Tap Handles in Random Lake, Sheboygan County makes tap handles for hyper-local microbreweries all the way up to companies like the publicly traded Molson Coors.

“So we do roughly half a million tap handles a year, so it’s large," Eric Gruener, the president of Hankscraft AJS said.

Inside the largest beer tap manufacturer in the United States

Big changes in women's health care as Planned Parenthood Wisconsin re-started abortion care statewide, Monday.

This comes after last week's announcement that Planned Parenthood would be opening up appointments and starting services this week.

Dozens of anti-abortion rights activists lined the streets of Milwaukee's Water Street location Monday for most of the day. They said this change is a disregard for the law, while abortion rights activists said this is a move in the right direction.

"Knowing that I one, had a choice, not only did I have a choice, but I had a safe place to get it done," Shantell Riley said.

In the early 90s, Riley said she was faced with the difficult decision to terminate her pregnancy.

Abortion care resumes at Planned Parenthood in Wisconsin

The U.S. government is once again on the verge of shutting down as lawmakers are unable to agree on a new funding bill.

The deadline is Oct. 1.

A prolonged shutdown could have a widespread impact in Wisconsin, from furloughs for federal workers to funding for childcare and other programs.

"What we're really looking at is kids who don't have a safe, quality learning environment and parents who can't go to work," said Jennie Mauer, executive director of the Wisconsin Head Start Association.

Free federal dollars for Head Start programs in Wisconsin help 16,000 kids, their families as well as thousands of workers, according to Mauer.

For many grant holders, she said, the financial impact would not be immediate. However, a shutdown would create concern for families and staffing.

Waukesha unveils new public safety memorial

Jordan Love rallied Green Bay from a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit in his first career home start — a comeback that began after New Orleans lost quarterback Derek Carr to a shoulder injury — and the Packers stunned the Saints 18-17 on Sunday.

The Packers (2-1) scored 18 points in the final 11 minutes to win their 11th consecutive home opener, the NFL’s longest active streak. They took the lead on Love’s 8-yard pass to Romeo Doubs in the right corner of the end zone with 2:56 left.

Jordan Love torches Saints in 4th quarter in huge comeback win vs. Saints

Multiple West Allis police officers fired at a man believed to be armed with at least one knife, killing him Thursday morning, police said.

The man was about 36 years old, officials said during a press briefing on Thursday.

Police said it started around 6:36 a.m. near 71st and Greenfield in West Allis.

Officers responded to a call of family trouble. At the scene, officers encountered an adult armed with at least one knife.

Man armed with knife shot dead by police officers

Some owners of the Horizon West Condominiums in Waukesha say they're relieved their unexpected, and traumatic journey has reached a new stage — demolition.

"I was just glad that we are one step further to being at the end of this process," said Laurel Peterson, an owner.

On Tuesday, the Waukesha Common Council approved the low bid of $837,000 for The MRD Group to tear down the building at 315 N. West Ave.

Peterson and dozens of other tenants were suddenly evacuated by the City from Horizon West in December 2021 over fears it could collapse. Since then, they've been entwined in legal battles after becoming displaced, losing equity in their homes and much more.

The power of a loving pet for struggling veterans

The Helping Hands group home on Sunset Drive in Milwaukee has closed, the office of District 11 Alderman Mark A. Borkowski tells TMJ4 News.

This comes after 47-year-old Helping Hands employee Avery Lamar Davis was charged with felony Intentionally Abusing Patients, Causing Bodily Harm.

A criminal complaint released Tuesday states that video showed one of the group home employees striking a person with autism staying at the group home. The worker allegedly hit the person around the corner from the group home, on Wedgewood Drive.
