This Black History Month, we're kicking off a series highlighting the people and places that make up Omaha's Black history. First up is an area of a town with a significant impact on the Black community in Omaha.

When making medical decisions doctors often utilize a standard of care or best medical practice when deciding the best course of treatment for a patient.  But there are some cases where a medical practitioner, through changing circumstances or their own judgment, feel they can’t perform or prescribe a certain treatment.  A new bill wants to make sure their right to refuse is enshrined in law.

Bill looks to protect doctors who oppose treatments based on conscience

The Omaha Public Library along with several of its partner organizations is looking to the community for feedback, including a survey, to determine the future of what will be included inside its branches.   The library also expects to announce around five or six community events to influence the 2023 "Library Facilities Plan," said Assistant Library Director Rachel Steiner to 3 News Now.

Foster Love resembles other trendy places to shop. But nothing inside is for sale. The Ralston boutique doesn't exist to make money. Its sole purpose is to serve kids in foster care.  Years ago, Amber Richardson, the founder of Foster Love, and her husband became foster parents. They met their son, who was now 16 years old when he was 14 months old.

Angelwingz is the newest addition to the Kamp Blackstone food hall on 36th and Farnam. It opened in January and the word is already out about their unique take on wings.

A well-known Omaha woman was hospitalized Monday after what friends are calling a brutal attack that left her unable to move.  A police report lists it as a robbery offense and gives little information, but mentions a "possible assault" and "possible fall." It lists a robbery offense, a suspect and a hate/bias status code that means "unknown." It said she had extensive injuries to the neck and spine and said her cell phone and keys were missing. Police said further information is not available because the investigation is ongoing.

It's unimaginable — what Target team members have shared since January 31st.  "I was scared this is how I might die — at work. It was just terrifying, to be honest," Lauren told 3 News Now on the day of the shooting at the store at 178th and Center.  Her colleague, Samuel, also spoke with us.  "This really drives it home that it could happen anywhere, it could happen at any time, no matter who you're with. It's just very surreal," he said.  Yet, those in red were credited by police and shoppers with saving lives.

When the Heartland Hope Mission's Warmth for Winter coat drive started this season, pastor Chelsea Salifou knew the need was great.  "We have seen the number of people that are requesting assistance with clothing and coats skyrocket," she said.  But the community's response was also great and now we have the numbers to prove it.
