A group of high school seniors hosted a STEM Fair for foster and under-served youth driven by a local dream builder program. 23ABC’s Breanna Polk shares more about their leadership right here in Kern County. 

“Growing the Genius Generation” is one of four teams in the Ford Dream Builders leadership program. The program consists of eight local high school leaders who had a goal of providing stem-based initiatives to local youth.

Stella the german shepherd is eagerly awaiting being reunited with her brother, Indy. He found himself in quite the predicament Wednesday afternoon stuck 40 feet down a well. Owner Mark Pugh says Indy, a 9-year-old retired law enforcement dog, is in good spirits and responding well to treatment. Pugh, a Navy vet, stood by for four excruciating hours Wednesday after Indy fell into the hole that was covered by thick brush. He gets emotional thinking about what happened.

It's no secret that the White House and many environmentalists want to build more wind projects around the country.

From offshore sites to new wind turbines on farmland, it's a push that has some big dollars behind it.

In fact, over $370 billion in taxpayer money is set to be spent on clean energy projects, like wind, in the coming years.

Not every American is eager to welcome wind turbines, however.

Small communities pushing back against wind developers

If you don’t have solar you better get it soon because new regulations are coming. Net Energy Metering is the selling of energy produced from solar power systems to the power grid owned by utilities like PG&E. It's sold at a set rate provided by the California Public Utilities Commission. Now, the commission has approved a Net Billing Tariff, and it’s set to go into effect this April.

Three hundred families from Oakland will continue receiving $500 a month for the next six months as part of the Universal Basic Income Program.

A historical outpost in eastern Kern County is serving up breakfast and peace of mind. Military servicemembers gather in Ridgecrest several times a month to share stories as part of a mission to promote camaraderie and mental health.

The historic Ridgecrest USO building still stands along Ridgecrest Boulevard. It opened during World War II to service men and women citizens. The building was the site of the first war memorial in Kern County. Today, it still offers services to veterans in Kern County and surrounding communities.

The gatherings held at the USO look and taste like a monthly veterans' breakfast, but they are more than that.
